Ireland

Two men, weathered faces, kindly eyes

lean in  towards each other

over pints of dark brew,

white foam to the brim,

and talk of the weather, politics, the arthritis.

A lamb, black face, white fluffy coat

dashes around the ewe,

jumps off rocks, leaps in the air

simply for the joy

stops briefly for some rich nourishment

then back to exploring in widening circles.

The famous deep emerald green,

Dotted with splashes of bight yellow

Waterfalls everywhere,

slivers of blue on dark grey rock

merge to steams running through shady glens

and into the great rivers.

Paddy Byrne is reposed in his home on Donegal St

This Friday from 6 to 8

He will be removed to Fitzgerald's Funeral Home for prayers...

And so the litany of the dearly departed goes

on public radio several times a day.

Such is the care they have to remember the dead.

Dublin, city of love and literature,

In St Stephen's Green couples dot the landscape

On a bench a sleeping couple entwine

she holds him, he holds an open novel.

Ireland, I see why you

Tug at the heartstrings of so many

With no blood connection to your land.

You have suffered so much

Through conquest, through occupation,

Theft of your land, starvation,

Cruel domination, repression of your faith.

Yet you remain warm hearted,

Both pious and irreverent,

So full of life and song.
